Custom Cabinets Versus Semi-Custom Cabinets
Makena’s offers custom and semi-custom cabinets, however, most
of the time we recommend our semi-custom line because it is a better
product for the homeowner. Makena’s has found the term “Custom” is
often misused and sometimes incorrectly confused as a better product.
Most of the time Semi-custom cabinets have better finishes, are more
competitively priced, and are a much better value. Makena’s premier
line of Wellborn semi custom cabinets are finished with a 24 step finishing
system that creates better durability, exceptional appearance, and ease
of clean that cannot be duplicated in your home from custom cabinets
that are finished normally using a four or five step finishing process.
Custom cabinets are either finished on the job or in a contractor’s
warehouse using lumber from the local mill and the only real difference
between what many contractors are calling custom versus semi-custom lines
is that the finishing process is less controlled and when done in California
completed with inferior products due to regulations. The 24 step finishing
system used in our factory far surpasses the quality of custom cabinet
manufacturers similar to a paint job on a new car compared to a paint
job completed in a garage or in a warehouse. Our experience in residential
and commercial painting, (over 1000 homes in Southern California), helps
us understand the painting business and importance of the finishing process
better than a typical custom cabinet maker. One cannot duplicate the
methods and materials used on these cabinets without breaking laws (California
VOC and other regulations) and incurring excessive costs.
We can design your kitchen down to the inch, and the cabinets are created,
fabricated, and assembled specifically for you. They have a lifetime
warrantee from a major, family owned and operated company that exceeds
warrantee industry standards.
Semi custom cabinets offer easy quick and accurate replacement if there
is a problem with a door. Moreover, the offer more accurate color match
as they are finished in a controlled environment. It is true that some
woods and finishes may age, discolor, and patina over time, but this
is a natural occurrence with any wood cabinet that will never change.
Our cabinets are constructed using solid plywood box construction or
a more common furniture board material that is more resistant to warping
and failure. The face frame and doors are all made of choice, hand picked
solid lumber in a large variety of wood species. Our drawers are a standard ¾ in
solid wood dove tail constructed box with options to fit your specific
needs. Armed with the knowledge of the true advantages of semi-custom
cabinets versus custom cabinets a majority of our clients choose our
semi-custom line over our custom option.
Semi-Custom VS Modular Cabinets
Our semi custom line is not a “modular cabinet”. Modular
cabinets are pulled off of the shelf and assembled in your home. Although
we do carry a line of modular cabinets so that this options is available,
typically, it is not the best option when looking for a custom kitchen.
Most of the time these products are used for track builders, rental properties
or clients looking for a quick face lift before re-sale. (the advantage
of modular cabs, besides price, is that we have them in stock now.)
